Prosecutors moved to vacate Syed’s conviction after they uncovered new evidence suggesting two other potential suspects were overlooked in the original investigation. Syed has appealed his case on several occasions. The investigations have alleged prosecutors relied on inconsistent testimony from a classmate of Syed’s, Jay Wilds, who claimed he helped Syed bury Lee’s body, as well as unreliable cell phone tower data to place him at the scene of the crime. Several investigations-including the Serial podcast and an HBO docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed-as well as advocacy efforts from those close to Syed have led to doubts about the evidence linking Syed to Lee’s death.
